Frequently Asked Questions:
Tipping at a Medical Spa?

Many people have asked this question on tipping etiquette for Medical Spas. Medical procedures like Botox you are not expected to tip. If it's a regular spa treatment like a massage or facial, tipping 15-20% is customary.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Laser Hair Removal

How does it work?
The Harmony Laser System uses gentle AFT light to damage the hair follicle. The hair absorbs the light and converts it into heat. The hair transmits this heat into the hair follicle, which it destroys, without damaging the skin. This disables the follicle from growing hair, which means that gradually over several treatments, there is a permanent reduction in the amount of hair in the area.

How Does Hair Grow?
Hair follicles develop from a complex series of interactions between different elements of the skin. Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time. They actually go through distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting. The duration of each phase is dependent upon several factors, including body location. For example, at any one time 90% of the hairs on the scalp are in the growth (anagen) phase, compared to only 70% of the hair on our arms. During the regression (catagen) phase, the surrounding skin begins to absorb the hair bulb. Finally, the hair enters the resting (telogen) phase, at the end of which the hair falls out and the follicle begins the cycle again. For this reason, treatment must be repeated until all hair follicles have passed through the growing phase. Clinical studies indicate that four to eight treatments are needed at intervals of six to eight weeks. Your laser technician will advise you regarding the optimal number of treatments for you.

Is it safe?
Treatment is very safe for the skin. There are many advances in the Harmony technology that make it one of the safest hair removal systems available for all skin colors. There are no long term health hazards for light used in the Harmony. It has been used for decades in medicine, surgery and aesthetics without adversity.

What kind of results can I expect?
Each Harmony laser treatment will result in less hair coming back, as well as hair growing progressively lighter in color, finer and slower-growing with each treatment. It takes more than 1 treatment to affect all the follicles growing in an area. Most people achieve satisfactory clearance after 4-8 treatments, but individual results vary depending on medical and genetic factors. Lighter colored hair may require more treatments than darker colored hair.

How frequently do I need treatments?
All hair follicles go through periods of dormancy and growth. As AFT pulsed light only affects hair follicles that are actively producing hair at the time of treatment, resting follicles must enter the growth phase before they can be effectively treated. For this reason, treatment must be repeated until all hair follicles have passed through the growing phase. Clinical studies indicate that 4-8 treatments are needed at intervals of 6-8 weeks.

Will the hair grow back?
Over time, you may notice some re-growth depending on your change in health. However, the majority of hair will be gone for good. We would recommend a follow up treatment every year to keep the area completely free from hair.

Does the treatment hurt?
The sensation is often described as “hot pinch”, or “snapping” feeling. The sensation only lasts for fraction of a second, and you may feel warmth or a tingling sensation for a short time afterward. Most people tolerate treatment without any topical anesthetic cream, which may be used to numb the skin from feeling sensation for very sensitive individuals.

What happens after each treatment?
Temporary pinkness in the skin lasts a very short time, and most people return to work or normal activities immediately after treatment. The treated area will “shed” some hairs over the next 3-4 weeks, and you may experience a period of hairlessness in the area while you wait for your next treatment.

Who can be treated?
Anyone who wants a solution to shaving, waxing, plucking or electrolysis. There are a few medical conditions that contraindicate people from treatment which will be discussed with your laser technician during consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions:
BOTOX

Understanding what Botox is and how it works is essential to making a confident decision in choosing this form of treatment that prevents and softens the signs of aging.

What exactly is BOTOX Cosmetic?
BOTOX Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is a nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people 18 to 65 years of age. During treatment, very low doses of BOTOX Cosmetic are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles that cause those stubborn lines. The treatment is usually done in about 10 minutes, and no recovery time is needed. Within days, you may see an improvement that can last up to 4 months. Results may vary.

How does BOTOX Cosmetic work?
Those moderate to severe frown lines between your brows form over time as the result of muscle activity. BOTOX Cosmetic is injected directly into the muscles between your brows. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles; this reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those persistent lines to form.

When will I see results from a BOTOX Cosmetic treatment?
Within days, you may see a marked improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows. Lines continue to improve for up to a month, and results can last for up to 4 months. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of men and women rated the improvement in their appearance as moderate to better 1 month after treatment. Results may vary.

How long does BOTOX Cosmetic last?
Results from treatment with BOTOX Cosmetic can last for up to 4 months. If you discontinue treatment, the frown lines between your brows gradually will look like they did before treatment.

Who should administer BOTOX Cosmetic?
Any authorized healthcare professional can administer BOTOX Cosmetic, but dermatologists, plastic surgeons, ophthalmologists, otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat doctors), or other physicians specializing in cosmetic procedures are generally more experienced. One of these physicians can help you decide if BOTOX Cosmetic is right for you.

Will I experience any side effects?
The most common side effects following injection include temporary eyelid droop and nausea. Localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding/bruising may be associated with the injection. Patients with certain neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.

Do not use BOTOX Cosmetic if you:
  • have an infection where BOTOX Cosmetic will be injected
  • are allergic to any of the ingredients in BOTOX Cosmetic
  • are pregnant or think you might be pregnant.

What should I tell my doctor before using BOTOX Cosmetic?
Only your doctor can decide if BOTOX Cosmetic is right for you. Before starting treatment, tell your doctor if you:
  • have any diseases that affect your nerves and muscles. These diseases may increase your chance of side effects with BOTOX Cosmetic treatment.
  • are breastfeeding
  • are planning to become pregnant soon.

Can any of my medicines interact with BOTOX Cosmetic?
Be sure that your doctor knows the names of all the medicines you are using, including:
  • antibiotics used to treat infections, such as gentamicin, tobramycin, clindamycin, and lincomycin
  • medicines used to treat heart rhythm problems, such as quinidine
  • medicines used to treat different conditions, such as myasthenia gravis or Alzheimer’s disease.

As with all prescription medicines, you should also notify your doctor if you are taking any over-the-counter medicines or herbal products.
